Fixing the gnome panel in Ubuntu

I installed Ubuntu 10.04 (Lucid Lynx) ages ago but never got round to using the restricted drivers. Well, it just worked OK, so I figured leave it. Today I tried them – installation was fine, no problem, and moving the two screens around in the Monitors tool worked fine, except I ended up with the top panel in the right-hand monitor – annoying but not the end of the world.

I had a look through gconf-editor (don’t bother, unless you have a very good idea of what you’re doing!) and gave up. Thankfully, a simple google search found me what I wanted – instead of trying to fix it with gconf-editor, use alt-drag to move the panel from one screen to the other. Bingo, fixed!

This will work for moving panels to other locations, top to bottom, or even to left or right. Enjoy tweaking your desktop!
